Where have you been?!?

Scene set up:

It is a hot, humid day in September.  A Lady hangs her head down, looking shamefaced at the computer in front of her…

If you were in my kitchen right now looking at me, that is pretty much what you would find (well, and some dishes in the sink, papers on the counter…Don’t judge me…)

I have finally found my way to Butterscotch Lady after a bit of time away.  Ok, let’s be honest (because we can all check the date of my last posting), since July 23rd!!!  How did all of that time escape from me without a loud cracking sonic boom?  Shouldn’t I notice that over 7+ weeks have passed since I last sat at my computer to chat with you?

Ooohhh, wait a minute, I know what that sound was that I was hearing: waves lapping on the sand, children’s laughter in the water, “Mommy!  Watch this” over and over (and over and over…), crickets at night (ok seriously!  How loud are they?).  It was the sounds of summer and I just could not escape them (nor did I really want to)!

Baby Girl and her Posse on July 3rd

As Baby Girl would say, “This was the best summer EVER!!”  What made it so great that I was willing (and obviously able) to ignore all of you?

HB City Jr. Lifeguards!!!

Buddy, for 6 years and Baby Girl, for  her first year, continued the family tradition of spending 8 weeks at the beach participating in the “Surf City” Jr. Lifeguard program.  I was in the program from the ages of 10 to 16 and they truly were the best way to spend summers.

Living as close to the beach as we do (3 1/2 miles), we think it is important that our kids know how to respect the ocean and how to survive in it.  Anyone that has spent time in the ocean knows that it is very different from swimming in a pool.    Buddy was a Safety Aid which means that he helped with all activities that other Jr. Guards participated in.  (He earned 50 volunteer hours as a Safety Aid!)

Of  course for me, it meant I took some fantastic pics of Buddy helping Baby Girl.  Some of them just make me want to weep seeing the love and protectiveness between them (with a teen and ‘tween, it happens less often than I would like).

The “Safety Aid” and the Jr. Guard

I also made a wonderful new friend through Jr. Guard’s.  She and her son are Canadian and are living here until December before returning to Ottawa, Canada. It is such a sweet surprise at my age to feel an instant connection to someone and to know that we will be lifelong friends no matter the distance that may separate us.

Mr. Cabana and I tried to spend and enjoy as much time with family and friends as summer would allow~ BBQ’s, Drive-In Movie nights, Girl’s nights, pool parties, a movie on the beach (it was amazing!!!), vintage swap meets…

A little Butterscotch Schnapps and Hot Tamale never hurt anyone! Cups came from Smart & Final. They are the perfect size for shots, er, um I mean for SIPPING!

Butterscotch Lady and her “Posse” at a pajama Ladies night.

I know, I know, summer has been over for a couple  of weeks so what is my excuse for still not doing a post?  My kid’s schools, soccer…You know the feeling of just resisting getting back into the regular routine of homework and practices, volunteering…I think I block out every year just how BUSY the start of school is for all of us.

Now that we are into our 2nd full week of school, I am beginning to find my sea legs again, routine wise.  Maybe I should tackle those dishes in my sink now or stop by my girlfriend’s house who has a free table I can re-finish…?

Whoops!  No time!  I have to run to pick up Baby Girl from school.

      Time really does fly by!

See you again, very soon. I promise!!!

  Until next time,

Butterscotch Lady

PS.  Baby Girl just turned 10 yesterday and we are in the throes of party planning.  Looking forward to sharing her party with you in a couple of weeks!

Hail & Water(marks) Everywhere!

Yea!

We actually had some exciting weather today!  For the first time in many years, it hailed here in Surf City.  How funny is it that Mr. Cabana (Hubby is trying out this name for the blog!) and I are running around the house looking for a camera to take pictures of the hail?  Seriously, even I know how ridiculous that is!  Of course as soon as the hail started, it ended.  I did take pictures but the hail was so small and melting rather quickly with the pouring rain, that the pics are laughable for  my Northern friends!

Due to our “weather system” we had today, I thought I would post one of our favorite picture “stories” from a couple of years ago.

The “aren’t we adorable and loving siblings” picture.

The “I don’t think anyone is watching me” picture!

Let that be a lesson learned, NEVER turn your back on Baby Girl when snow balls are involved!

While this weather was “hitting” us, I was very busy watermarking pictures.  And  more pictures.  And more pictures.  OMG!  My dad has always said I take a million pictures.  I think he may just be right!  (Shhh!  Do Not Tell him I said that!!!).

I think in the back of my mind I always knew I would start a blog as a way to share my love of design and entertaining.  So needless to say, I have quite a large backlog of pictures to share with you.

I was ill last week so what did the Dr. order?  Lots of rest, liquids and Pinning!!!!  I have added more amazing pins to my boards that I plan on sharing soon.  I also plan on actually doing many of the great things I found.    Have you made anything from Pinterest yet?  I would love to see what you have done, send me a picture and I will add it to a future post!

Until Next Time,

Butterscotch Lady

The Cutest Artist~Ever!

First I have an announcement~ My son has decided to be referred to here on my blog as “Buddy”.  Baby Girl could not say his name when she was a baby so she started calling him “Buddy” and it stuck.  I love that he chose a name that reminds me of when my kids were little and actually played with one another!

My husband is still undecided.  Personally, I am thinking “Cabana Boy”… :0)

*******************************************************************

This past Saturday Baby Girl and I were special guests at artist Timree Gold’s ADORABLE      art studio in Newport Beach. I have known Timree for years, actually I knew her when her  mom was pregnant with her!  Her mom Teddi was my Girl Scout Leader and our parents have been friends for nearly 35 years.  Our moms now “Do Lunch” with a group of ladies they have been friends with since my elementary school PTO days(Go Burke Bears!).

Timree comes from very talented parents.  Her dad Tom’s Christmas tree decorations were gorgeous. I still remember that during the Iran Hostage crisis, he wrapped and displayed a gift for each hostage in their front yard.  Teddi is amazing at throwing parties and her gifts are always wrapped beautifully!  I have to admit if I know she is coming to one of my parties, I feel just a little added pressure to impress!

If you have noticed the mural in pictures of our playhouse, Timree is the amazing artist that painted it.  In one day!!!

I loved that Timree painted a “little something” that represented what the kids loved at the time. Buddy loved (and still does!) Star Wars so he had to have his own light sabre. He was also reading the Harry Potter books so they are painted just to the right of Baby Girl’s purse. She was very much into the princess stage and “My Little Pony”.

I loved the look of the black & white floor tile (I laid it all by myself!), but the laminate flooring we laid last year is SO much easier to keep clean!

Look how little my kids were! Hard to believe Buddy is now taller than my Hubby and me.  And Baby Girl with that crown? I just want to scoop her up and nuzzle her neck…

Ta Da!!!

 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Timree is having the OC Housewives in her studio and will be on

The Real Housewives of Orange County” next Tuesday!!!

I got to hear some of the details Saturday

and I am SO EXCITED TO WATCH!!!

Come back next time and I will show you the pictures from Baby Girl’s and my art class with the Famous Timree Gold!

Until next time,

 Butterscotch Lady

{Leave a comment and let me know if you will be watching the Housewives on Tuesday. And don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone that you watch that show too!}

“Butterscotch Lady”?

You might be wondering at this point (this point being my 3rd post) what kind of blog is Butterscotch Lady?

Lets start with the name…

My favorite hard candy is butterscotch and my Grandpa always had a dish of butterscotch candies on a table by his pipe (that is where I imagine him sitting, now that he is gone).  As some of you may know, I am not of much of a drinker.  I do occasionally like a mango mojito (Z-Teja’s has the BEST!), mudslide or pina colada by the pool or a glass of red wine with C. & J.P. (they know who they are!), and I save all tequila (blech!) for my Colombian husband.  But I have never had a “signature” drink of choice.  UNTIL, I was introduced to Butterscotch Schnapps by a couple of girlfriends (R & M).  It was a huge hit at our annual Christmas party and where I earned the nickname “Butterscotch Baby” . But since I am not doing a blog about babies and thought people would get the wrong idea, I choose Butterscotch Lady.

So yes, the almost non-drinker has named her blog for a really yummy, liquid gold, alcohol beverage!  Plus, butterscotch is a beautiful choice for a room’s color scheme.

My wish for the blog is to share my passions for design, entertaining, pinning (as in Pinterest) and life as a busy wife and mom.

I have loved decorating for as long as I can remember.  For Christmas one year, my dad painstakingly built a dollhouse for me in his garage.  After my initial disappointment of it not having a garage (he has never let me forget that those were my first words regarding the house.  In my defense, I thought Santa had given it to me and my dad was ALWAYS in his garage tinkering. He finally built a garage when my son asked him where it was!)  Growing up, I relished decorating all of the rooms in the 3 story house.  I don’t think I ever really bothered playing with the people in the house.

I have attached a few pictures of the house that is still in my old bedroom (my kids now play in there). My daughter was the Stylist for this photo shoot.  She would love to hear your feed back on her dollhouse decorating skills!

This house has seen a lot of playtime! The garage is off to the left side. It didn’t make it into the picture.

The kitchen. The wallpaper is very similar to the wallpaper we had in our bathroom growing up.

The chic dining room. Check out the foil wallpaper. The only thing the paper in the background is missing is the flocking!

The bonus room. I always dreamed of having a large room like this when I grew up. It didn’t come true (yet)!

Can you guess which decade I received the house?  You got it!  The very stylish 1970’s, the decade of foil and flocked wallpaper, shag carpets and olive-green appliances.  I was going to re-do the interior of the house when my daughter started to play with it; but I guess I waited just long enough because wallpaper is back in a big way and I see a lot of shag rugs in the stores.  Thank god I haven’t spotted any olive-green appliances yet.  That look needs to stay in the 70’s!  (Although, I did see a bright yellow range at Best Buy the other day.)

I

Bertazzoni Professional X365GGV 36″ Pro-Style Gas Range with 5 Sealed Burners, 3.6 cu. ft. European Convection Oven, Manual Clean and Storage Drawer $4,799

What do you think of this range?  I actually really like the yellow, it would definitely be a focal point in a kitchen.  Would you be daring enough to have one in your kitchen?  Perfect color for Butterscotch Lady, don’t you think?

Until next time,

Butterscotch Lady

PS.  After reading my draft of this blog to my daughter, she said, “And you DO have butterscotch colored hair!” And there you have it folks…!
