Cheers to 2016!!!

Welcome to Butterscotch Lady and 2016 friends!

2015 just needed to slip quietly away and I am happy to ring in 2016 with all of you!!! I won’t get into why BL blog posts were sporadic in 2015 (hospital stays and major surgery for your’s truly!). But I am thrilled to be here and back to doing what I LOVE!!!!

my view posts are going CRAZY today and I am so thankful to White Walls and the military families that are finding our sweet little playhouse, error COTTAGE, as cute as we do!

I would love to hear from all of you! Comments and questions are really the icing on the cake of a post.

Until next time,

Butterscotch Lady

Hello, Again!

Boy, oh boy!!! The past several months have gone by in such a whirlwind that I don’t even know where to begin…

I have added a new service to “Butterscotch Lady”~ FLOORING!!! I am so thrilled to be partnering with Sterling Carpet & Flooring in Anaheim, Ca. I am working independently as a Sales Consultant and I love it! Flooring fits beautifully into my vision for my business Butterscotch Lady. I now can help you create a beautiful home and party, starting with your floor!

I am able to bring flooring samples directly to my client’s homes, which makes it much easier to choose the right flooring for the space we are working on. My door to door service also helps when you are juggeling work, kids, school…Who wants to spend time in a warehouse?

I have also been busy with the kids and their year end activites, hosting house guests (wait until you see pictures of the “new” Playhouse Cottage Inn! So cute!!!), planning parties, a banquet for Buddy and a wedding! Whew, I need more hours in my day!

As you all know, I am technically challenged and I was getting quite frustrated with my sweet little blog. I am still trying (unsuccessfully, I may add) to make Pinning my pictures much easier. Hopefully, I will be able to accomplish that goal very soon! (Tonight? :/ )

I just needed to step away and really think about what I wanted to accomplish from my blog. I have missed sharing my pictures and goings on with Mr. Cabana, Buddy and Baby Girl. Thanks for sticking around for me!

As a teaser, here is a collage of Buddy’s Academeny for the Performing Arts, Theatre Guild’s Awards Banquet. More pics to follow!!! PROMISE!

Changes in store for 2014!

Am I too late?!?  Is it still ok to wish everyone a Happy 2014?!?

I hope you had an amazing Holiday Season filled with love, family & friends and lots of laughter!

100_8006

{Thanksgiving table I did for a client}

I have been so busy these last few months with clients (YAY!!!), The Holidays, family, laundry, cooking, errands, you know trying to manage all the chores that we *just love*…Time has quickly slipped by.

I know it is January 21st, but it feels like it should be October.   Our warm Surf City weather has my body and psyche all out of whack!

I have wanted to make some changes with the appearance of Butterscotch Lady’s blog and have finally made the time to get to work on it. {I have been having issues with Pinterest pics no longer working on my page and have found it to be extremely frustrating.  That is also one of the reasons I just had to step a way for a while.} 100_7928-001

I have been very open in saying, I am *not* a techy person and the fact that I have made it this far with no help says something, right?

I am not very good at asking for help from friends {because who isn’t busy enough with their own stuff?} but a dear friend of mine has offered to give me a hand and I am taking her up on it.  Hopefully it will help me stay more focused on the *fun* aspect of blogging and not the technical glitches I keep experiencing.  Wish me (us) luck!!!

So I hope you will continue to follow and enjoy Butterscotch Lady and look forward to a few changes and “upgrades”.

Until next time,

Butterscotch Lady

I *LOVE* reading your comments!

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for what you

would like to see on Butterscotch Lady.

Buddy’s fanSTACHEtic 16th Birthday Party

It is difficult to believe that Buddy turned 16 this past weekend.  How is it possible?

Time just keeps flying by without my permission…

Birthdays have always been a big deal at our house.  Mr. Cabana and I started a tradition when we were dating, to celebrate our birthdays for a whole weekend.   For one entire weekend we can do whatever we want and the family has to just go along with it,  without any complaints.  {Because as you know, ONE day a year is just not enough!}

So with this “Birthdays are a big deal” thinking, we had been asking Buddy for months (and months…) what he would like to do for his big 16th birthday.  (Party? Hollywood?, Getty Museum? Drive In movie night?…)  And the answer we got over (and over, and over?)  “I. Don’t. Know.”

Now for a planner like me, do you have ANY idea how difficult it was to hear those three little words?  And it is not like I could take control and plan something for him on my own.  I mean, after all, I am dealing with a teenager.  I am not completely off my rocker!

I finally gave Buddy a deadline to decide whether or not he wanted a party about 7 weeks ago.  He decided, that “No, he did not want a party.”  Ok, fine.  {Well, to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t fine with it, but it was his decision.  I mean who doesn’t want a birthday party, am I a right?}

So flash forward to five (5!) days before his big day.  His best friend is at our house telling Grant that he going to be so disappointed come his birthday if he has nothing planned. He knows Buddy very well!

You see where this is going, right?

Five days before the BIG 1-6 and Buddy decides that “YES! I actually really do want a party!”

Really?!?  Seriously?!?  Are you KIDDING me?!?  NOW you decide to have a party?  With. 5. days. notice?

Did I tell him “No! You missed the deadline I set for you.”  Or “No! I can’t possibly plan a party in 5 days?” Ummm, you know me, right?

My answer went something like this, “Yes, I can pull it off.  But do not expect a whole lot.”

I had to get my mind around the fact there would be not a fabulous invitation being sent out (hello!  5 days people!), most custom items were out, ordering anything was out…You get my point, right?

So I immediately sent out an Evite {when in a pinch, these really are pretty great}, Buddy sent out a text with the Evite link {thank goodness for teens and their technology!}, I sent out an SOS text to my friends knowing that they have great items for me to borrow, and jumped onto Pinterest.  All of this probably within 10 minutes of Buddy telling me about a party.

Flash forward 5 days {Some things just were not able to be pulled off.  Movie of Buddy through the years? Not finished…Oh well}

{Buddy and his friends are off for a day of fun, while I work on the party}

Organizing My Party Pantry

I have been busy organizing cupboards and closets (ok, really it is just one closet so far!) the last couple of weeks.  I feel like I am slowly making some progress.  I say slowly because we are on a budget and I can not justify going a one big spending spree at The Container Store, Home Goods or Burlington Coat Factory to purchase everything on my “wish list”. I really feel that having the right products do make getting (and staying) organized is important.  Plus, if I am going to do the work, I want it to function and look great too!

Last week, at The Container Store I purchased one of my favorite organization tools~ Their Shoe Box.  I buy their bulk box (20 boxes for $33).  At the Costa Mesa, CA store the boxes are located at the front left of the store when you walk in.

I have found them to be the best boxes for organizing everything from kids toys, craft supplies, party items and of course

shoes!   Over the next couple of posts you will see these boxes used.  In this family of four, I often find myself fighting a lone battle of organization.  I mean really, isn’t life easier when we can all find our stuff  in neatly labeled boxes?  How many minutes a day do we (I really mean THEM) spend looking for stuff?  I have resorted to telling Mr. Cabana, “I would like everything to have a specific place (preferably labeled) in case something were to happen to me.”  Fatalistic?  Perhaps, but I see it as being “prepared”.

My theory was put into action last week when a friend stopped by to pick up some party supplies.  I was on the phone and unable to help her.  I sent her and Mr. Cabana to my (newly!) organized Party Pantry and guess what?  They were able to find exactly what they were looking for WITHOUT ME!!!!  That is something to be proud of, right?  I can actually feel my hour-glass gaining a few sands of time…

Now I am under illusions of grandeur regarding my Party Pantry or closets.  I drool just like the rest of you over the AMAZING pictures on Pinterest of pantries that frankly, I just will never (ok, maybe not NEVER, but seriously not likely!) have.  Seriously?!?  Can you believe this pantry below?  Sadly, I think it is about the size of my master bathroom…

But my inexpensive OSH garage cupboards have done their job for us for 10 years so far. Do the shelves sag in the middle a tad? Yes, but Mr. Cabana can fix that! So I choose to be proud of my pantry just as it is (imagine my fist in the air)!

This is an ongoing project as I will probably tweak it over time.   To keep it organized this time, I have labeled each box and the shelf location with my Dynamo Label maker from Target(I LOVE THIS TOOL!!!).

So I hope if you ever need anything from my Party Pantry, I know you (and Mr. Cabana)  will be able to find it without my help!

“They was organized I tell you!” (Quote from the movie “Chicken Run”)

Finally!!!  We have managed to put away our many, many totes of Christmas decorations into the attic.  Why does it feel like this process takes longer every year?   I am always excited when I am able to consolidate items and have one less tote to pack and put away.  Do you ever feel the same way?

Now that everything is put away for yet another year, I can finally get down to some serious organizing.  I want to go through each of the kid’s closets, Mr. Cabana’s side of the closet and his dresser, the linen and coat closets, my party pantry and the cabinets in the playhouse.  Just to name a few!

I figure if I tell you what my plans are then I REALLY need to accomplish these tasks.  I guess you could say I like knowing I am accountable to all of you!

I wish Baby Girl’s closet could look like this…

My dream for our bathroom cabinet!

I say dream because you would not believe how SMALL our vanity is.

The kid’s bathroom has a pedestal sink that I love, but no storage.

I keep thinking I need to break down and put in a vanity.

Each of my kids have a couple of boxes filled with school work treasures.

They are stacked by the grade level, but I love this idea.

Hopefully I will be able to finish my organizing just in time for Spring cleaning to begin. The work just never end, does it?

Before & After~

One of the things I like most about what I do is finding a piece of furniture in a not so great state, and with a bit of elbow grease, turning it into a fabulous piece.  You all know about my , shall I say, “diving” opportunities to find pieces for free.  However, sometimes a girl just needs to pay a little bit of money for a piece that has great potential.

I found this piece at a local swap meet and paid $15 for it.  I have seen drop leaf tables sell for much more, so I knew I had to snatch it up.  I thought it was a great deal on a piece that is made well, but just needed to be “updated” (Painted!).   I know some people do not believe in painting wood items.  “What? Your going to cover-up the wood grain?!?”  They ask me.  Yes, yes I am!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I like wood furniture.  But I really LOVE painted furniture.  I like pieces that look like they have been around for a while, that have been well-travelled and loved.  The more layers of paint and rubbed edges, the better I say!

However, it is not always possible to find or afford a piece of “vintage” looking furniture.  So I look for a piece that has great lines, made of wood and is cheap affordable.  With paint you can make just about anything look fabulous, vintage and “pricey”.

Sorry about the flash in the frame!

I sanded the table with my electric sander to knock off the finish.  Primed with Kilz Primer and painted two coats of Home Depot‘s Behr brand semi gloss black negro (same paint I used for the outdoor buffet).  I sanded the edges a bit to bring out the lines in the piece.  Plus, with kids in the house I have found it is best to distress the furniture myself first.  It could be the, ahem, control freak in me, but at least I will know exactly how that first scratch and/ or nick got there on the piece I slaved over!

We all know things can become distressed by the “little” people”.  I often recommend distressed furniture to clients that have children in their homes.  It helps the stress level by not having to worry about the high gloss lacquer on a piece when it becomes a Hot Wheel track or a Barbie stage!  We can have the “fine” pieces of furniture when our babes leave the nest.

Source: anniesloan.com via Butterscotch Lady on Pinterest

I have many pieces sitting in my garage that need to be attended to.  I just need  some great , consistent weather and oh yea, free time to get to work on them!  I am hoping to be able to be able to place an order of Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint before I start on these pieces. I have been drooling over the fact that I do not need to sand or prime the furniture before I paint when using Annie’s paints.  I say, “Amen to that!”  Her paint is more pricey than the home store paints I tend to use ($40 vs. $20). Not counting on her brushes and waxes.  Hopefully the budget will soon allow an order of chalk paint!

On Pinterest I have found “homemade” chalk recipes.  So maybe I will whip up a batch and try it out while I am “dreaming of my Annie Sloan order…

Until next time,

Lets Start Spring Cleaning!

I love this time of year because the weather is changing from from cold temps to weather that we can open our windows and let the breezes come floating through our homes.  Here in Surf City, we are so lucky to have mild temperatures for most of the year.  Think of the Mediterranean and that is pretty much our weather here too.

Source: myseastory.wordpress.com via Joana on Pinterest

So with my windows wide open, with breeze coming in it gets me in the mood to clean and organize!  Ok, really?!?!  Well, not “in the mood”, I would rather be laying on the beach reading a book!

{Have any of you read Fifty Shades of Grey?  Oh my…!}

But I would like to be laying on a beach this summer, knowing that I have “deep” cleaned my house this past spring and all I need to do is the regular, weekly cleaning.  (At least until the kids go back toschool, but that is a post for another day!)

On Pinterest I have come across SO MANY household cleaning tips.  I have a whole board dedicated to this subject.  How sad is it that I get excited to see a tip that may make my chores easier and CHEAPER?

I have tried the “Miracle” shower door cleaning tip where you spray Lemon Furniture Polish (Pledge) onto shower doors, leave for 5-10 minutes, then wipe down.  The hard water spots are supposed to disappear and the “residue” from the polish will repel further spots from forming.  This tip failed for me.  Sure my bathroom smelled lemony fresh, but I still have cloudy shower glass!

So far, vinegar still seems to be the way to go for clear doors.  I prefer the lemon fresh scent of Pledge as opposed to vinegar, but at least vinegar is CHEAPER than furniture polish!

In a squirt bottle I mix 3 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. (I eyeball the amounts to be honest, but it works out to be about 1 to 3).

I want to buy some car wax and apply it to my glass to see if that helps.  I’ll let you know if it becomes my new “miracle” tip!

Do you have any “tried and true” cleaning tips?  I would love for you to let me know what they are!

Until next time,

Butterscotch Lady

It’s Here! It’s Here!

As of today April 6th at 2:50 PM. Pacific Standard Time

is here!!!!

I am not sure who is more excited me or the kids?

On Pinterest I saw this sign and thought it was such a great idea to mark a special day. Of course I remembered this idea literally 8 minutes before I had to pick Baby Girl up from school.  If anyone had been watching me those last few minutes they would have thought I was crazy!  I grabbed paints and brushes, squirted different colors onto a plate, un-rolled the craft paper and painted as quickly as I could.  I liked how the “S” turned out, the rest?  Not so much.  Oh, I wanted  it to say “Spring Break” right?  Forgot about the “Break” part when I started painting and had to squeeze it in.  Oh, well!  I will make sure the Summer one is really well done.

Who am I kidding?  I will be running around on the last of school too!  Maybe I will give myself 15 minutes to make that sign!  (The kids still thought it was pretty cool to pull up and see the sign. Do you know how difficult it is to impress a 14-year-old.  TOUGH!)

I have been so busy I just haven’t done much decorating for Easter yet.  I say “yet” because I am hoping the Easter Bunny will help a “gal” out and decorate for me.  I will let you know how that works out me!

I did do a fun “art” project with Baby Girl the other day in the playhouse.

Do you remember the feeling of doing art work on your classroom chalkboard when you were young?

I always loved being able to do that!

I just loved Miss Mustard Seed’s (below) chalkboard artwork and had to see  if I could possibly imitate her artistic style.  I definitely need to practice more and use smaller chalk. I used the fat sidewalk chalk which was more difficult to work with.

Source: missmustardseed.com via Butterscotch Lady on Pinterest

If you have never visited Miss Mustard Seed’s blog, she is one of my very favorites.  She was even on the Nate Berkus Show this past Tuesday.  Check out her site and let her know I sent you there for a peek.

Spring Has Sprung!

My Amaryllis in full bloom. My mom gave me several bulbs years ago from her yard. I love that they have multiplied over the years. (FYI, this is the wall we show movies on for our “Drive- In Movie Nights”.)

I am absolutely, completely FLOORED that it is already spring and that Easter is less than one week away!  Where has the time gone?  Just about the only thing I have ready for Easter is Baby Girl’s outfit!  (White eyelet sun dress with a coral cardi and coral sandals.) Adorable!

Ok, I will admit it, she is ALWAYS the best dressed in the family!  I am not picking favorites when it comes to my kids, but let’s be honest, Buddy is a teen and jeans and t-shirts are his favorite!  Although I know he will “dress up” and wear a cool button down shirt for hunting for eggs.

Yes, at 14 he still hunts for eggs with Baby Girl.  Gotta keep up appearances!  Plus, no hunting would equal no Easter basket and he surely is not going to risk not receiving any chocolate! (Shhh!  Family secret, my brother and I had to hunt for eggs until he was 20 and I was 18!) We finally drew the line at those ages and made our parents and a couple of their friends hunt for eggs the next year.  Hey, come to think of it~  I think they are over due for another egg hunt….

I usually do not do too much decorating for Easter.  I did find this adorable FREE Printable on Pinterest the other day.

Source: thirtyhandmadedays.com via Butterscotch Lady on Pinterest

My mom gave me this old frame that had been hidden in a closet a while back.   I just have not had the time to paint it until this past weekend.  I thought it would be perfect for the spring print.

I LOVE spray paint!  Just be sure to wear gloves so you are not scrubbing your hands for longer than it took to paint!

Our family had a couple of birthdays this past week.

Mr. Cabana’s  birthday was last Thursday and our beloved dog Alexa turned 10 years old on April 1st.

Baby Girl is helping me plan a “Doggy” party to celebrate with Alexa and her doggy friends.

I look forward to sharing that blog entry soon!
